Reacting to news this week that Burgons of Eyemouth is likely to close its crab processing plant in the town Jim Hume, Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for South Scotland said:
“Our coastal fishing communities are still heavily reliant on seafood processing for jobs so this sad news is a huge blow for the 32 permanent employees at the plant.
“Of course I want every available support measure in place for the staff through government agencies if redundancies happen, but before we reach that stage I want Scottish Government Ministers to step in to see if there’s anything that can be done to find a new buyer or interested party in taking over the business.
“Government has a key role in protecting local business and local employment.”
