Speaking ahead of the East Lothian Welcomes Refugees activity weekend, Liberal Democrat MSP for South Scotland Jim Hume said:
“The scene of that small boy, Aylan Kurdi, washed up on the beach in Turkey was an utterly heart-breaking and devastating scene for any human to compute.
“It’s our moral duty to help people when they most need it. That’s why it’s so encouraging to see grass roots organisations like ELWR getting involved in helping refugees, and I’m pleased to support their efforts. Politically, we need a European agreement to ensure that member states each do their bit to help the refugees, with an understanding that any agreement must not raid the existing international aid budget.
“We can do better than 20,000 over 5 years.”
