Mental health services redesign in Stranraer must work for patients

Commenting on the Darataigh services redesign in Stranraer Liberal Democrat South Scotland MSP Jim Hume said:

“Nationally we know that there is a problem with people accessing mental health services with people either not being referred because there is no provision or languishing on waiting lists. That’s why I want to see mental health services on a par with physical health services so no one in desperate need of help has to suffer in silence.

“News that Darataigh has closed is hugely disappointing to the patients and their families.

“Whilst there are some welcome points in the health boards redesign of services such as making use of Galloway and Newtown Stewart community hospitals, I am concerned that patients required inpatient treatment will be located in Dumfries which is a long way to trek for families and is potentially therefore distressing for patients. The health board needs to explain how this can be mitigated.”
