Kris Chapman today renewed his call for immediate payments to be made to farmers who have lost out as a result of repeated delays in CAP payments.
Earlier this month it was reported that farmers could end up facing punitive interest payments and additional banking costs under the terms of the emergency scheme set up by the Scottish Government, following the failure of their IT system.
Kris Chapman commented:
“The CAP payment delays have taken hundreds of millions of pounds out of the rural economy and farmers have been forced to renegotiate loans and overdrafts with their banks. We learned that the SNP expect farmers to stump up for interest on emergency payments. That would not have been necessary if Minister had done their job properly. They are treating rural communities with contempt.
“Farmers should not be footing the bill for SNP incompetence. Liberal Democrats will guarantee to increase the resources deployed in advance of future rounds of CAP payments to ensure there is no repeat of the shambles we have seen this year. We will also establish an immediate restitution scheme to compensate farmers who incurred extra banking costs because of the delay in their CAP payment. That is the right, fair thing to do.”
